Do you have a Bedtime/Wind Down Routine?

Do you have a predictable set of events that happen before you go to bed, i.e. shower, brush teeth, bed and then read a book before going to sleep?

Just like adults, a bedtime routine is equally important for our little ones as it cues their brain that sleep time is approaching.

Having a predictable wind down routine that is repeated before each nap and a more extended version before bedtime is an important element of sleep hygiene.

A consistent bedtime routine helps your little one switch mental gears allowing them to relax and calm themselves in readiness for sleep. The daytime and nighttime routine is essentially the same, however the nighttime routine is a more extended version including a bath, book and feed (where appropriate).

Babies thrive on routine! I recommend the following bedtime routine for your little one:-

  • Bath (night time only).

  • Set the scene in your little one’s sleep environment by having the curtains or blinds closed, lights dimmed or lamp on and white noise playing (if age appropriate).

  • PJ’s.

  • Feed (if appropriate).

  • Sleep bag.

  • Book and/or song.

  • Into cot/bed.

  • Kisses & cuddles.

  • Good night sleep cue “sleep time now”.

  • Lights out, walk out!

By repeating these actions each time your little one is put to bed they become clear cues to your baby’s body that it is sleep time.
